As in so many human endeavours, the field of education is heavily influenced by technology. Our students, from kindergarten to pre-university (and later into university), are:
• finding information on the Web
• accessing peer-reviewed journals
• learning online, often through educational games and subscription web sites
• communicating with teachers and professors through email
• consulting experts via computer-based video conferencing
• collecting and analyzing data using data loggers, sensors and spreadsheets
• presenting information and ideas in the form of web sites, graphs, animations, digital pictures, videos and music
• designing products using computer aided design and computer aided manufacturing
• creating and programming robots
• doing group work with students living in other countries...the list goes on.
At GESS, we want students to:
• Learn technology...the skills to use technology productively
• Learn through technology...use the power of technology (and its motivating influence) to learn in all areas
• Learn about technology...the impact of technology on our world, including issues of online safety and privacy
Our students use computers extensively. While there are set information and communications technology (ICT) lessons taught by specialists from PrePrimary to grade 10, students are often taken to the computer labs by homeroom and subject teachers for extra time – for research, analysis and presentations. In addition to our four well-equipped computer labs (two on each campus), we have computers in both libraries for research and computers in most classrooms as well as our growing collection of educational robotics kits. From grade 9 onwards ,students purchase their own laptop computers through the school and their lessons are enriched through this “one-to-one” access to online resources and specialized software.
